The only change I made to the recipe was using beef broth rather then chicken. Information technology was wonderful! ;-)

Y'all could add drained cooked hamburger to this instead of beef and I chopped my veges in a small quisinart. I also used rehidrated onion every bit I forgot onion at the store and 1 T. fresh oregano, fresh parsley. 1 bay leaf. Made a double batch westward/ large crushed tomatoes, I will simply utilize one can side by side time. It made two pretty skilful sized pots. Adjacent time I will utilize my 9qt. bandage atomic number 26 pan on low. Cooked for virtually 2 hours and could not keep the kids away from it. Information technology freezes beautifully.

My "I hate vegetables because I'm sure they'll impale me" xi year old helped make this soup. He and his 9 year quondam, "I'll eat SOME veggies unless they're green" brother both loved the smell as it cooked. I had my 11 year old "endeavour the soup" to see if it was done and he LOVED information technology. I added more veggies including chopped fresh spinach and a can of beef chunks from Costco instead of the regular beef. I'm trying to eat more legumes and this will be on the top of my legume recipe list now! If the kids volition eat information technology, it'south all good!

We absolutely loved this. I modified it only slightly - using function chicken broth and role beefiness stock, because that's what I had on hand that needed to be used up. I did not apply the cilantro - but parsley. I but added one cup of lentils, which was plenty for the corporeality of stock that I added. In the terminate, it was more than like a stew. I served it over ditalini pasta with crusty french staff of life on the side. Delicious!

A fantastic combination! The beef and lentils become so well together. This recipe is a real winner - no changes needed, although I substituted beef goop for the craven broth like many other reviewers. As with many soups/stews, it's fifty-fifty amend the second day.
03/01/2010
I followed other reviews and used beef and vege broth instead of chicken. I added some frozen corn and peas also every bit about 2T Worcestershire. Too, I didn't take enough lentils on hand so I did half lentils/ one-half barley. I'll definitely make it again.
10/02/2014
This was a great Fall dinner. I changed the recipe up a flake and used Johnsonville Italian sausage instead of the beef. I did cut the garlic back to 3 cloves (my garlic cloves were really large) and used beef broth instead of chicken. Anybody loved information technology, so much so that I had trouble saving a bit for lunch the next 24-hour interval. I thought the family was going to start licking the pot.

I of my all time favorite soups! I practise make a few alterations when I make this only I stick pretty close to the over all idea of the recipe (I apply veggie broth vs. chicken, practise not like cilantro or celery, use veggie meat instead of real). This recipe shows me that some of the real winners on this site exercise non necessarily have hundreds or thousands of reviews. This is a existent hidden gem!

My husband and I loved this soup! It didn't last long in our kitchen and we'll make it once more soon!
03/12/2012
I did not brand the soup exactly because I had dissimilar ingredients just it came out great. I used crushed tomatoes instead of fresh diced tomatoes. I besides added a beef bouillon cube. I also added about 2 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce and two bay leaves since I had them. Lastly, I threw it all in my slow cooker for v hours on high.

Yummy! Omitted celery. I used a pound of dry lentils, merely considering when I measured out 2 cups it just left about ane/three cup in the bag, and what am I going to exercise with 1/3 loving cup dry lentils? Used beef broth. Did not have oregano or cilantro; used thyme and marjoram instead. Next fourth dimension will probably add more meat, less liquid, and serve more as a stew. Lentils were good, simply the meat was outstanding. Volition make beer bread side by side fourth dimension - seems like this would be a dandy pairing.

I am not a usually a lentil fan, but this is spectacular! I apply actress lean ground beef or ground sirloin instead of the chuck. I as well apply a combination of beefiness broth and chicken (almost a two:1 ratio). Brilliantly flavourful. Cheers so much for sharing!
08/23/2014
This recipe is truly a hidden jewel! I made it to the specifications except for the fact that I used beef broth as all of the other reviewers mentioned. While it was so succulent the day I made it, it was even more delicious the day subsequently!!
01/20/2012
40 minutes to cook lentils in a simmer merely wasn't long plenty. The soup was tasty, just with kinda hard lentils, it bombed...
09/16/2011
Very good. Commencement time I used lentils. I used beef broth and Ground beef because that was what was available and added a box of frozen spinach. I also added a nuance of chili powder. It was perfect on such a chilly day! definitely a keeper.

I use beef and veg goop instead of chicken and barley instead of lentils. I didn't have lentils on hand the first time I fabricated it and the barley is perfect! I love this recipe and information technology's a definite staple in my house.
x/24/2011
I loved this soup! It was full of flavor! I will definitely be making this a regular. I did not change anything except I did non have cilantro or oregano, and then substituted dried parsley and marjoram and omitted the fresh parsley at the end. So worth the wait!!!!
11/13/2009
I gave this 4 stars because it took almost 12 hours on "how-do-you-do" for my lentils to go tender. I really had to flake this for dinner that night because it wasn't done. (Side by side time I will follow some other reviewer'south suggestion to add the tomatoes subsequently in the process.) I saved this in the fridge for some other dark and the leftovers were definitely 5 stars! This is the best lentil dish I've always made. Next time, I will either cook it on the stove, and then I have more control over the oestrus, or I will boil my stock and water earlier adding it and then it doesn't take so long to start cooking the lentils. The smoky season of the kielbasa really blends with the spices and lentils to make a delicicous stew!
01/04/2011
Perfect for a common cold January night! I made some of my own beef stock w/ my leftover Christmas Prime Rib roast. I didn't have lots of meat, merely the flavors were great. A tin can of crushed tomatoes worked well since I was out of diced. I also used fresh cilantro and a splash of cherry-red vino in my bowl just because I had some. A good Balsamic vinegar would besides be tasty. The parm on meridian was excellent. Leftovers for tomorrow! Yes!
04/01/2011
My family LOVED this recipe! We followed others advice (and the picture!) and put it over pasta, which we enjoyed. The meat was tender equally were the lentils and the flavor was absolutely wonderful. We will be putting this in the dinner rotation for sure!
02/20/2009

01/23/2016
I made this as stew in the crock pot for about 7 hours. I just added all the ingredients and used beef stew chunks. It tasted delicious!
03/14/2010
Yum! When I read the recipe, it seemed like an odd combination of herbs, but it was really adept. I used basis beef, just because that was what I had on hand. I'll add some more broth to the leftovers, though, because it doesn't seem to take enough left.
01/07/2011
I made this soup with my leftover continuing rib roast from Christmas dinner. It was hearty, tastey and easy to brand. Like others suggested, I used beefiness goop instead of chicken. I also left out the celery. I would brand this again.
05/13/2017
Cheers for this recipe, it is Delicious! My changes were: Reduced lentils to i cup and cooked them separately in water and beef broth. Add lentils with liquid to beef and love apple mixture later. Upped beefiness to ane 1/2 pounds Changed craven broth to beef broth and just used i 32oz box. Cooked beefiness, tomato plant, goop combo for an 60 minutes before adding cooked lentils, and then cooked on slow simmer another one-half hour, uncovered. Increased garlic and oregano amounts.
11/19/2016
I made a half batch, tossing all ingredients in the wearisome cooker for about 5 hours. I also used beef broth instead of craven and things turned out wonderfully! Reheats very well and then it's bully for lunches.
12/05/2012
Cheap, tasty, and easy. I used beef bullion and water in place of chicken broth. My husband said I could keep practicing with this i, and went to get another basin. :)
01/29/2012
excellent soup, tried making with pork - sooo good, taste like my gma's recipe, she used to add 2 T red vino vinegar at the terminate of cooking so I did likewise, yummy!
x/08/2010
Made as recipe stated with exception of using beef broth instead of craven broth as other reviewers had suggested. Meat was tender and the season was nice simply nothing spectacular. I would use about one-half the lentils called for - at that place were definitely more of them than anything else - and increase the veggies.
11/17/2009
This was a great lentil soup my married man and I loved it.
05/20/2019
My married man and I really like eating this soup, but we made some changes to it that we recall arrive taste MUCH improve and accept more than flavor. The changes we made are as followed: i. We changed the chicken goop to beef broth (why chicken when you are cooking beef?) and added 2 cups more than since the lentils blot so much of the broth. ii. Nosotros besides halved the lentils put in to make the soup more liquid and less lentil thick. 3. We added kale and red cabbage at the stop to add some actually prissy crunch and texture to the soup.
01/25/2015
Then great! Made information technology twice information technology was so nice. I used my pressure cooker to make this and in half the time! Pressure cooking instructions: After browning meat, cooking the veggies, seasoning, adding stock and lentils; close hat and get to pressure, rocking for 4 min. Cool immediately. Remove veggies and lentils. Put meat in stock and build to pressure. Rocking for 15 min, let pressure drop on its own accordance. So put the veggies and lentils back in the stock and you're done!

02/xix/2017

02/13/2018
I wonder if this would practice well in a crockpot all thrown in at once. Its also tardily to wait for opinions considering the deed is done. I volition take to see how it goes. I as well added some mushrooms, and beef boullion , fresh tomatoes instead of in the can.
01/28/2018
No changes and wonderful. Doubled everything and take a proficient after work snack for pre workout. High protein and tasty.
01/31/2016
I used more than beef than the required corporeality and used beef broth instead of chicken broth. I besides let it simmer for an hour longer. Lentils were fully cooked and soft.
01/13/2019
I used filet mignon. Simply amazing!!!
01/xiii/2015
This soup was so practiced that we have made information technology a permanent in our tabular array. My family has requested so many time that now I over make the soup and freeze it and then that we can eat it again the following week.
04/19/2014
Very prissy flavours. I was looking for a veg or chicken soup and liked the ingredient combo for this recipe, so used chicken instead of beef and instead of lentils about a cup of mixed grains/beans I had on paw. As well skipped the cheese. Information technology is a great base of operations for a soup and I will try the exact recipe as I like lentils. This should exist great for beef barley likewise,
01/13/2018
Turned out very good. It makes a lot. I froze half and plus had lunches for two days. I made it according to recipe except used sirloin steak that I need to utilize and beef goop made from my leftover bone rib roast from christmas. Best Lentil soup! Very tasty, dear the chuck roast in it. Would recommend making to anyone who is not crazy about lentil soup - this recipe will change your mind!
12/xiii/2018
Reminded me a lot of what my mom used to make so I added whatever else she did put like chorizo and potatoes, and I have to say that a lot of the flavour comes indeed from the chorizo. Use fresh cilantro for a stronger herby flavor, and please do not add cheese when you serve it, it might overpower an already tasty dish. Very unproblematic to make!
01/fourteen/2016
Information technology's quite nutritious and filling. I used canned lentils and added maybe half a cup of barley

Made some Bisquick Cheese and Garlic biscuits, and of grade ate too much, lol!
03/23/2019
Practiced base of operations recipe....just needs a lot more flavour than only salt pepper and oregano...I ended upward putting thyme, Italian and a fiddling chip of creole and cayenne to give it some real flavor
07/06/2016

Very hardy soup.
05/12/2019
It was super delicious, but i had a problem with the liquid. In 30 min later on the beef etc were added the soup became too thick and started sticking to the pan, and then that i had to add water twice. Also added cumin which i love.
01/xvi/2017
Amazing and flavorful beef lentil soup! I did what another reviewer suggested and added a beef bouillon cube, used beef goop and added 2 tsp of Worcestershire sauce. Definitely a keeper! Thanks!

04/08/2014
5 stars for the flavor! So skillful - 1 less because information technology is not 8 servings- fashion more than. Maybe treble. I added 32 oz. of chicken broth to make it more like soup. I will definitely make this once again. It's a great recipe to make and share!
05/27/2015
I fabricated this vegetarian style by omitting the beef and adding a tin can of tomato paste.
03/29/2020
fantabulous soup on any occasion
09/26/2016
Beloved this recipe! I did substitute beef broth for the craven, used browned and tuckered ground beef instead of stew meat, (first time I made it I used browned and drained ground venison, it was AMAZING!), Nosotros are not garlic fans so I left that ingredient out, I found that I needed to add near 20 more minutes to get the lentils tender enough. My hubby said it was possibly the best soup he'd always had !
03/28/2016
Used Bob's veggy soup mix and beef broth..

05/11/2021
In step two, after 20 minutes I added the lentils and skipped pace iii. It turned out so delicious and the meat then tender! This is an fantabulous recipe every cook should know! Using this recipe I know I can change around meats, spices, and veggies and have an excellent dish every fourth dimension. Give thanks you!
ten/eleven/2020
This was pretty good! I didn't have cilantro and then I added a tiny fleck of ground bay leaves and chili powder. I also added a whole small box of spinach for even more iron. I recollect it could use a flake more flavor- maybe more spices/herbs. Perhaps 1lb cooked ground beef in a packet of taco seasoning would be bang-up hither.
